Vellari Pachadi / Yellow Indian Cucumber Raita - Kerala Style

Vellari Pachadi is a traditional accompaniment in Ona Sadhya menu.   It is a very tasty coconut and yogurt based raita which we all love.   Let us learn how to prepare this pachdi.



Ingredients:

Vellari - 1 cup
Yogurt / curd - ½ cup to ¾ cup
Salt - To taste

For seasoning:
Mustard seeds –
½  tsp
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Red chilly - 1
Coconut oil - 2 tsp

To Grind:
Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
Mustard Seeds - ¼ tsp
Coconut - 2 tbsp
Green chillies – 1 or 2






Directions:

Wash, peel and remove the seeds.  Cut  vellari into bite sized cubes and keep aside.


Take a kadai; add the cubed vellari along with little water and salt.  

Meanwhile grind the coconut, green chillies, cumin seeds and mustard seeds into a coarse paste by adding very little water; keep aside.



Close the lid and allow to cook till it become soft.

Once it is done; add grounded paste; mix well and allow it to cook for 5 minutes.



Turn off the gas. Once it is cooled, add curd and mix well. The pachadi have to be in semi thick in consistency.

Season it it with the above mentioned ingredients and serve as an accompaniment to any spicy gravy with rice.





Note:

Adjust the amount of green chillies according to your taste bud.
